Welcome

FdL

I am the Barber Professor of Jurisprudence at Birmingham Law School, University of Birmingham and Honorary Professor at the Australian National University College of Law (2019-2024). In Birmingham I am also the Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer for the College of Arts and Law.

My work focuses on counter-terrorism, human rights, abortion law and policy, and comparative public law. These topics are drawn together by my interest in what work ‘human rights’ does in complex and divisive policy fields. I supervise a number of graduate students working on human rights law and practice, constitutionalism and comparative law. In 2017 I was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize in Law, which provides £100,000 to support my research from November 2018 until November 2025.

Outside of work, I play tennis (poorly) and golf (rarely), and enjoy cooking (I track my cooking efforts on Instagram). I am married and live in Birmingham.
